Moving to Ireland from the US in 2026: Permission Routes, Shipping Costs and Customs Relief

US to Ireland in 2026: compare permission routes, shipping quotes, transfer-of-residence relief and the IRP timeline before you book a container.

Moving to Ireland from the US in 2026 is a sequencing problem before it is a shipping problem. The permission route decides when you can travel; the shipping quote decides what the move costs; Revenue's transfer-of-residence window decides whether the container arrives duty-relieved. Get those three in the wrong order and the cheap quote becomes an expensive storage bill. This guide starts with the route that fits your circumstances, then breaks the shipping quote into its real cost lines, then sets out the customs conditions and the registration clock in the order they need to happen.

1. The permission route sets the clock

The first decision is which permission lets you live in Ireland, not which mover to book. The 2026 employment-permit thresholds apply at the point of application, whether it is a new permit or a renewal. From 1 March 2026, the General Employment Permit minimum annual remuneration is €36,605, up from €34,000. The Department's December 2025 announcement put the Critical Skills Employment Permit threshold at €40,904 from the same date, while its live MAR table shows €40,909 for a CSEP with a relevant degree and €68,911 without one. Those are different published figures; do not blend them, and check the table current on your application date.

Stamp 0 requires an individual income of €50,000 per year, access to a lump sum for sudden major expenses, financial documentation in spreadsheet form converted to euros and certified by an Irish accountancy firm, and private medical insurance with full cover in private hospitals. All applicants must apply before arriving in Ireland; average processing is four months.

The Foreign Births Register is open where one grandparent was born in Ireland, or where one parent was an Irish citizen at your birth even though not born in Ireland. Entry makes the person an Irish citizen entitled to apply for an Irish passport; processing currently takes about 12 months and the adult fee is €278. Citizenship can remove the immigration problem, but it does not by itself change the customs test, because transfer-of-residence relief turns on residence and the move rather than nationality.

2. What the shipping quote is actually pricing

A US–Ireland household move is usually sold as a full container (FCL), a shared load (LCL) or air freight; one forwarder quotes ocean freight at 4–6 weeks and air freight at 5–7 days.

FCL and LCL are priced differently. On an FCL quote, ocean freight, terminal handling and documentation are fixed per container or per shipment. On LCL, almost every line grows with volume: ocean freight is per cubic metre or per 1,000 kg, whichever is greater; there is an origin container-freight-station (CFS) consolidation charge per CBM; and there is a destination CFS deconsolidation charge plus a delivery-order fee per CBM. LCL commonly has a 1 CBM minimum, though some forwarders set it higher. That is why comparing an LCL quote that shows only ocean freight with an all-in FCL quote is the classic error.

For expectation-setting only, one comparison platform's 2026 corridor guide puts a 20ft container at $3,500–$8,600 and a 40ft at $5,500–$10,600 door-to-door; it describes those as modelled ranges, not quotes, and says real quotes vary with mode, CBM, access, customs and sailing schedules. Treat them as a reason to collect three all-in door-to-door quotes, not as a rate card. The comparison formula is: 20ft FCL all-in rate ÷ LCL all-in cost per CBM.

Cargosum's worked example uses $1,800 for a 20ft container and $130/CBM all-in for LCL, which gives about 13.8 CBM; those dollar figures are explicitly illustrative, not market rates. The commonly quoted 13–15 CBM crossover is a rule of thumb without a primary source. At those example rates, LCL is usually cheaper below about 8 CBM, a 20ft container is usually the better buy from roughly 13–15 CBM, and a 40ft becomes worth pricing from about 26 CBM.

3. Transfer-of-residence relief: conditions, documents, exposure

Transfer-of-residence relief can remove customs duty and VAT from genuine personal property and household effects when you move from outside the EU to take up normal residence in Ireland. It is not automatic and it does not pay freight or removal services. Revenue's conditions are cumulative: duty and tax must have been paid in the country of purchase; you must have had possession of, and used, the goods for at least six months before the move, or 12 months for goods acquired duty-free by diplomats and members of international organisations; you must have lived outside the EU continuously for at least 12 months before the move, though you may qualify if you can prove you intended to live outside the EU for that continuous period; and you must import the goods within six months before, or 12 months after, the date you move.

The early-import rule matters if you ship ahead: where importation happens before you move, you must agree to reside in the State within six months of the importation. If you hire out, lend, sell or otherwise dispose of the goods within 12 months, you must pay the import charges.

Not everything qualifies: alcohol and tobacco beyond normal duty-free allowances, tools used in a trade, commercial vehicles, and property imported for commercial reasons are excluded, and some goods are prohibited, subject to conditions or may require a licence. The application is form C&E 1076 (Rev 2), emailed with supporting documents to Revenue two weeks before the goods arrive; the same procedure applies whether the goods come by courier, a removals agency or personally accompanied by you. Revenue asks for proof of residence abroad, proof of the move, and ownership and use — for example invoices or receipts showing taxes and duties paid and not refunded, property purchase/rental/lease documents, employment or cessation-of-employment documents, and evidence of day-to-day living abroad. Items of value should be listed at an estimated current market value; used clothing and toiletries can be grouped as personal belongings. An Post no longer facilitates TOR applications, and any cost arising from a Revenue examination is your responsibility.

If relief is refused or clawed back, import charges — customs duty plus VAT — become payable on the goods. This guide does not establish the rates that would apply, so confirm the basis with Revenue or a customs broker rather than budgeting from a percentage you saw online. The 23% VAT figure in one Irish mover's terms is VAT on removal services, not import VAT.

4. The sequence: approval, sailing, arrival, IRP

Build the plan backwards from the sailing date. You or your authorised agent email the completed C&E 1076 and supporting documents two weeks before the goods arrive, not on the day the ship docks.

The import window gives you room: goods may arrive up to six months before the move, provided you undertake to reside in Ireland within six months of importation. The immigration clock starts on arrival. A Stamp 0 holder arriving with an approval letter gets a landing stamp of up to 90 days and must register the permission within that 90 days. The registration fee may be €300 depending on the type of permission granted, and the IRP card is posted to the address you give within 10 working days. Failure to register promptly may result in future applications or renewals being refused.

The commercial clock is separate. World Removals' published terms exclude port charges including demurrage and inspections from its quotation; if delivery cannot be made, the goods may go into storage and storage and re-delivery are at your expense; re-delivery from store after six months from the quote date can attract additional charges. A container can land inside the customs window but outside your ability to receive it. That is a cost problem, not an immigration problem, and it is the one to design out.

5. Compare quotes on clause types, not headline price

Ask for an all-in door-to-door quote with both ends included, and compare all-in against all-in. World Removals' published terms show the line items a quotation can exclude: insurance, cancellation/postponement waivers, customs duties, port charges including demurrage, inspections, and government fees or taxes. The same terms make the quote valid for 30 days and add charges if work does not start within 28 days, if re-delivery from store is not taken within six months, or if freight, fuel, ferry or toll charges move.

Cancellation can be the largest surprise. Those terms escalate to up to 30% of the quoted price more than 10 working days out, up to 60% under six working days, up to 75% within 48 hours and up to 100% once work starts, plus a minimum fee and carrier deposits. Liability is capped at 50c per item or 8% of transport costs unless you pay to raise it.

Magnum Movers & Packers' terms add 23% VAT on its services, charge extra for items not on the survey form, revise quotes for unseen properties up or down, and treat dismantling or assembling flat-pack furniture as excluded work attracting an additional charge. These are clause types from two companies, not an industry standard: check the same lines in every quote you receive. Ask each mover whether it re-weighs at origin and how a volume change is priced; treat that as a question, not a documented standard clause.

Insurance is not included in World Removals' quotation. If you are relying on a mover's liability cap, read the moving-insurance explainer before you sign; a liability cap is not the same as cover.

FAQ: the questions that decide the booking

Common Questions and Answers

Can I ship my furniture before I have my IRP card?

Yes within the customs window. Revenue allows import up to six months before the move if you undertake to reside in Ireland within six months of importation. Registration happens after arrival, within 90 days. The risk is commercial: if you cannot receive the container, storage and re-delivery may be at your expense.

Does Irish ancestry make my shipment duty-free?

Not by itself. Transfer-of-residence relief turns on residence and the move, not nationality. Foreign Births Registration can make you an Irish citizen, but it does not change the customs test.

Which documents should be ready for Revenue?

Form C&E 1076 (Rev 2), proof of residence abroad, proof of the move, and ownership and use evidence such as invoices and receipts. Email them two weeks before the goods arrive. List valuables at current market value.

What happens if relief is refused?

Customs duty plus VAT become payable on the goods. This guide does not establish the rates, so confirm the basis with Revenue or a customs broker. Disposing of the goods within 12 months also triggers the import charges.

FCL or LCL?

Use the break-even formula: 20ft FCL all-in ÷ LCL all-in per CBM. At Cargosum's illustrative rates the crossover is about 13.8 CBM; below about 8 CBM LCL is usually cheaper, and from roughly 13–15 CBM a 20ft container is usually the better buy. Get three all-in quotes for your actual volume.

What to do next

Confirm the permission route first. If you are moving for a job, ask the employer which permit applies and what start date it is built around; the threshold applies at application, so the date matters. If you are retiring, start Stamp 0 early because average processing is four months. If you have Irish ancestry, check Foreign Births Register eligibility now because processing is about 12 months.

Then get three all-in door-to-door quotes, each broken into freight, origin handling, destination handling, customs, insurance and storage. Compare them on the break-even formula and on the clause types above, not on the headline number. Then set the customs date: C&E 1076 two weeks before arrival, import inside the six-month/12-month window, and register within 90 days of arrival. If the container will arrive before you can receive it, price the storage before you book.
